Abstract

This article presents a synthesis of agrarian liberalism developed in the Yucatan Peninsula during the first half of the 19th century, stressing the origins and consequences of the privatizing project set for th in the 1841 Laws for Colonization. The aim is to offer a point of view which differs from those studies which regard the policies of territorial dispossession carried out in this period as a lineal and triumphant process and as the main factor —or at least as one of those which triggered off— the War of Castes which broke out in 1847.
