Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to show that the cause of the rebels of the Caste War (1847-1901) coincides with the cause of so-called "hidden populations" Mayan speaking groups dispersed in the region was the scene of the war, the south and east of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico: the payment of civil and church taxes. Despite this coincidence those "people" were not considered part of the huge war that was the Caste War. Here, although we will not be able to identify the role played specifically those stocks at the origin of this war, where certainly there were several factors that argue for its rejection of taxes and segregation of society, of the Catholic Church in particular, for their search for autonomy, the "hidden populations" had a revolutionary potential may well have swelled the army of Mayan rebels
