Abstract

The island of Fuerteventura is currently developing a tourist reorientation process from which certain goods begin to acquire new significations by means of their patrimonialization. The declaration of several spaces under different figures of protection reflects a strategy to channel tourism development model via “culture-natureâ€. Gradually begins to be observed how the destination begins to be offered by an image of sustainable development supposedly based on scientific criteria. The result is a new reinterpretation of the patrimonialized elements in which largely is ignored the efficient involvement of local populations. The resulting conflicts reveal the different signification of these goods for the different actors and interests. This paper analyzes the configuration of the different projected images over these patrimonialized elements and the ways in which different collectives assign specific signification to them.
