This article examines the (self) construction of the ecclesiastical image of Francisco Orozco y Jiménez, archbishop of Guadalajara from 1912 to 1936. During his lifetime two contrasting images of Orozco y Jiménez coexisted, the one he created himself and the one that several anticlerical and civil governments drew of him. At the beginning of his rule one of his best weapons was the image of the young archbishop, at the end, his old man’s looks shielded him effectively of the attacks from the civil authorities. Photographs as historical documents are the main source of information in this analysis, based on the theoretical assumptions of Erving Goffman and Peter Burke on how individuals portray themselves in society, and the concept of tradition conceived by Eric Hobsbawm.Abstract
