This article seeks, on the one hand, to characterize the current historiography on the “Mexican” wars for independence —in particular, the so-called new political history. On the other, it aims to link such historiography to the social and political climate in which the bicentennial celebrations took place. Overall, the essay notices the eclipse of popular insurgents from the historiographical landscape, and suggests that there is still something relevant to be said about them —both in historiographical and political terms.Abstract
