This paper analyzes the resistance of the Native American Movement to recognize and confront the problem of sexism within their own communities, it also suggests the importance of supporting and developing a Native American feminist agenda as part of their decolonization strategies. The author points out that Native American communities frequently assume that women must defend a kind of tribal nationalism that ignores sexism in order to ensure women’s survival and attain Native American freedom from colonialism. On the contrary, this essay maintains that the analytical categories of race, tribal nation and gender must be linked in a non hierarchical way that includes the oppression of Native American women.
