This article explores the perceptions of “food risk” and “food security” prevalent among housewives of the Purhépecha rural communities of the state of Michoacán, México. The authors used the technique known as “discussion groups” in order to gather the attitudes, values and beliefs of Purhépecha women towards the food that’s available to them. The results of this study allow the authors to comprehend food security from a different perspective than the one that dominates official discourse.
