Abstract

This paper explains parts of the theoretical debate between liberalism and multiculturalism that is taking place in the academic world, but mainly, within liberalism itself, between a conservative liberalism and a more binding liberalism. The debate is focused on whether individual and collective rights are compatible in a liberal society, and also on how can the exercise of individual freedom be guaranteed within a collectivity. Some authors suggest that a reform of the Nation-state is necessary, in order to allow the construction of a multicultural state, as a result of a new social pact between the state, civil society and indigenous peoples, that not only expresses a recognition of the right to difference, but also a policy of social justice that involves society as a whole or, in other words, the right to be different should be accompanied by the right to redistribute.
