Abstract

This paper discusses the relationship between science and pornography, and how at the center of this relationship lies a transformation of our concept of the organic body that generated n ew expressions of erotic desire , and new avenues for sexual iconographic representation . A constant dominates this transition : the body is being ( re) constructed by science and ancient mythologies that have linked breeding and erotic life are experiencing ireversible reinvention . But why talk of science? Is that pornography did not exist before the revolutionary process through which human knowledge became more legitimized with the scientific method with the Christian revelation? Certainly not with the name of "pornography" , a term which , though possessing an ancient Greek etymology, does not appear in its modern sense until the mid nineteenth century , initially claiming for medical hygienists and subsequently by moralists and legislators.
