This article seeks
on the one hand
to characterize the current historiography on the “Mexican†wars for independence —in particular
the so-called new political history. On the other
it aims to link such historiography to the social and political climate in which the bicentennial celebrations took place. Overall
the essay notices the eclipse of popular insurgents from the historiographical landscape
and suggests that there is still something relevant to be said about them —both in historiographical and political terms. bicentenario
